The Apostle Islands, an archipelago of sandstone-cored land forms, are located just north and east of the Bayfield Peninsula. The Laurentide ice sheet of the Wisconsin glaciation reached its maximum extent about 23, years BP and had disappeared completely by 8, years BP. The Great Lakes enclose the largest single mass of fresh water in the world. Responding to local boosters interested in re-invigorating the tourist economy, the NPS sent Boston-based landscape architect Harlan Kelsey to visit the islands in to evaluate their suitability for a national park. In the past calendar years beach ridges have formed about every 30 years due to lake level changes and the rate of sediment supply to the area Thompson and Baedke, Continued and rapid deglaciation opened up new drainages and with land rebound, it lowered the lake level making the Apostles part of the Bayfield Peninsula. After the last glaciers melted about 12, years ago, they left behind Lake Superior which then unleashed its relentless fury on these shores. Much of the northern two-thirds of Bayfield County are underlain by sedimentary rocks consisting of sandstone, shale, and conglomerate. Visitors can hike, paddle, sail, or cruise to experience these jewels of Lake Superior. Last updated: April 10, The park is now recognized for its ecological integrity, its significant maritime history, and its spiritual and subsistence value to the Ojibwe people past, present, and future.

The modern shoreline of the Great Lakes is primarily the result of the Wisconsin glaciation and the subsequent deglaciation.

Following these extreme periods of rising lake levels controlled by land rebound, the Apostles were separated from the peninsula to form the archipelago. However, a unified system to manage and protect these places did not actually come about until Remember the last government shutdown and how much media and political attention was concentrated on the closure of the parks?

In they began efforts to establish a museum there, enlisting the assistance of both year-round residents and summer cottagers, specialists and amateurs. If they can find their park here, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore will remain and thrive, despite the changes, to celebrate the NPS bicentennial a hundred years from now.

Six lighthouses were built in the archipelago, and all have been automated; the exterior of the Raspberry Island light station has been restored to its earlyth-century appearance. Hiking trails with topographic contour lines and elevations will assist in your exploration on land.

In an odd way, this attention is a mark of how much these parks mean to the American people. Yet today, these iconic lights—along with the sea caves and beaches—are what visitors report they most like about the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

The Ice Caves of the Apostle Islands

The Apostle Islands have a long and storied history of human occupation. Nelson, for example, was not especially interested in the human history of the islands. Among these inlets were numerous caves carved by the waves: Sea cave along the Lake Superior shore.

It was known as Steamboat Island, although this name was apparently also used for Eagle Island itself, in which case Steamboat Island was called "Little Steamboat Island.

This means supporting the park rangers, biologists, historians, and other staff in our stewardship and educational work who do the science, maintain the trails, and encourage the personal connections. Ice retreat landforms, such as moraines, and ancient lake-phase shorelines associated with crustal rebound, ice sheet margin, and drainage outlet, stipple the Great Lakes landscape; these features have been further modified during the Holocene by lake-level changes and wind and wave processes.

Below the cliffs thousands of years of wave action had carved the sandstone into intricate shapes: Carved sandstone along the Lake Superior shore.

Perched dunes and beach dunes, for which the park is well known, sit on top of high glacial bluffs or lie along the beach, and adjust to the prevailing winds from Lake Michigan. The upper and lower most layers Chequamegon and Orienta formations are in the Precambrian Bayfield Group and were deposited by northeastward-flowing braided streams.

Public LawDivision E, Section Recreation[ edit ] Many of the islands offer public docking; a small fee is charged for overnight use. Yet today, in cooperation with the local Ojibwe tribes, the NPS works to interpret the centrality of the islands to American Indians past and present.

In this role, he conducted research into the stories of the men and women who lived on the remote islands in Lake Superior.
